Olive: the first feature film shot on a smartphone (video)

olive feature film la technic

Your smartphone might shoot HD, you might even have a dolly, but most of us know that 30 seconds of accidental filming inside a pocket and a blurry clip from the office party are about the best we can hope for. Not director Hooman Khalili. He made a feature length film using his trusty Nokia N8 and a custom lens, and now plans to show it in movie theaters. The film, called Olive, tells the story of a mute little girl, and the impact she has on the lives of those who meet her. Partly financed by the former Facebook CPO Chris Kelly, this Kickstarter story has the making of a movie itself. Should it raise the required $300k in funding, Khalili hopes it might even get a sniff by the Academy. That’s assuming, of course, they’ve had a recent change of policy. For a sneak peak and a look at the making of, check the video after the break.

Nook tablet review - La Technic

Nook Tablet Reviewed

While both the Nook Tablet and the Fire are decidedly consumption-only devices, the Nook Tablet appears to be the more well-thought out of the two. Its store is better arranged and easier to use, the battery life is better, and it’s less stuttery and aggravating overall. The device still pulls some punches of its own with its e-mail client and storage, and we have some doubts about its ecosystem, but the Nook Tablet is a better device than the Kindle Fire. It’s more than good enough to justify the $50 price difference between the two. Read more »

Honda Unveils All-new ASIMO Robot (video)

Bookmark and Share

honda asimo robot latechnic.comThe new and improved ASIMO robot was unveiled today in Japan, sporting a streamlined physique and scarily adept mind. In fact, Honda claims that its bot is now less “automated” than it is “autonomous” — all thanks to new behavior control technology that allows it to move and make decisions on its own, independent of human operators. Its external recognition capability and set of onboard visual and auditory sensors enable it to rapidly process information about its environment, which the ASIMO then uses to plot its next move. Combining long- and short-term sensor data, the droid can predict human movements and automatically recognize voices or gestures. Because of this, Honda says, the ASIMO could be more easily integrated within social environments, and peacefully coexist with its human prey counterparts. Check out the video after the break.
